Online Resources for Archaeological Research

This workshop on online resources for Archaeological Research has been organised by ARIADNE and forms part of the programme of CAA 2014, held this year in Paris.

This workshop will introduce archaeological researchers to a variety of online data resources, including those held by the three partners providing online access to their data as part of the EC Infrastructures funded Advanced Research Infrastructure for Archaeological Dataset Networking (ARIADNE) project. T

he partners are the Archaeology Data Service (ADS), ARACHNE at the German Archaeological Institute (DAI), and Fasti Online at the International Association of Classical Archaeology (AIAC). Each partner has a different focus. The ADS is based in the UK and supports research, learning and teaching with freely available, high quality and dependable digital resources in English, derived from UK archaeology, or UK-based (or funded) archaeology abroad. ARACHNE is based in Germany and provides archaeologists and Classicists with a free internet research tool for quickly searching hundreds of thousands of records on objects and their attributes, in both English and German. Fasti Online provides a database of excavations carried out in countries throughout the Roman Empire since 2000, providing a record in English and in the local language for each season. In addition to the ARIADNE partners, the workshop will feature a presentation on data and data integration in the Digital Archaeological Record (tDAR). tDAR is an international digital repository based in America for the digital records of archaeological investigations. All of the data providers will showcase the resources they have available and discuss how to use them, also illustrating the benefit to archaeology of making data openly available.
